Annual IUL Policy Review: Checklist to Prevent Surprises

What to inspect yearly: account and surrender values, loan balances, premiums, beneficiaries and lapse risks.

The bottom line

What to inspect yearly: account and surrender values, loan balances, premiums, beneficiaries and lapse risks. Real contract terms control. This is neither individual advice nor a quote.

Do not file it away forever

Universal life coverage needs ongoing attention. Charges change, crediting terms may reset and the funding plan you chose years ago may no longer support the intended benefit. Start with the issued contract and original illustration.

Schedule a check near your policy anniversary rather than waiting for a lapse notice.

Seven important numbers

Ask for account value, net surrender value, net death benefit, last year's charges, interest actually credited, total loan balance and recommended premiums for sustaining coverage under current and adverse assumptions.

Compare actual figures with earlier illustrations; differences are not necessarily errors because non-guaranteed figures can vary.

Beneficiaries and records

Check primary and contingent beneficiaries, allocations and changes after marriage, divorce or children. Confirm mailing address, email, premium payments and claims procedure. Keep statements and signed forms.

Naming minors, businesses or trusts warrants state-specific legal review.

Stress-test for lapse

Ask for an in-force illustration with lower crediting, current loan balances and a one- or two-year premium interruption. Identify years when additional funding might be needed, any applicable guarantees, and options for changing coverage.

Do not surrender current coverage or stop premiums until you understand the effects and have replacement protection in place if needed.

Know when to seek another opinion

Seek independent review for unexplained charges, pressure to borrow heavily, refused disclosures, unconditional tax promises or growing gaps between illustrated and actual values.

Verify agent licenses and carrier status with your state insurance regulator. Document questions and answers; good advice withstands comparison without pressure.

Put this into practice

  1. Request the actual policy, expense schedule and up-to-date illustration from the insurer.
  2. Compare guaranteed and non-guaranteed outcomes with an alternative covering the same need.
  3. Keep written questions and answers; seek independent professional review of tax or legal effects.

An annual review in under an hour

Gather the annual statement, policy contract, original illustration, premium history, outstanding loans, and beneficiary designations. Check whether the death benefit still covers the present household need and whether beneficiaries and their details are current. Review account value, surrender value, charges, applied credits, and benefit options.

Request an updated in-force illustration using today’s coverage and payment plans—not just the original sales illustration. Identify when additional premiums could become necessary under conservative assumptions and contractual guarantees.

Warning indicators that warrant action

Investigate rising charges relative to account value, loan debt growing faster than resources, declining accessible values, or sustainability that depends on persistently favorable illustrated credits. Revisit household income, dependents, health, debts, and financial goals.

A declining account does not automatically mean surrender is wise: surrender costs, possible taxes, and lost insurability may make hurried cancellation harmful. Evaluate written options first.

Keep a decision record

Note the date, statement figures, options considered, assumed credit rate, future premiums, and any written response from the carrier. Separate family-protection needs from retirement goals. With loans or MEC status, obtain tax guidance before withdrawals or surrender.

Set a yearly reminder to update beneficiaries, revisit coverage needs, and request an in-force illustration. The purpose is to detect trouble before a lapse notice arrives.
