At a glance

IUL is permanent life insurance with charges and a death benefit; a Roth IRA is a retirement account with its own tax rules. Neither is automatically a substitute for the other.

What are you actually buying?

An IUL policy provides life insurance and may accumulate cash value subject to contract terms. A Roth IRA is a retirement account holding investments chosen by the owner; it does not automatically include life insurance.

When comparing “growth,” separate the cost of insurance and policy charges from IRA contributions, and consider market exposure in the IRA investments.

Taxes: avoid “everything is tax-free”

Qualified Roth IRA distributions may generally be free of federal income tax when the legal requirements are met. Contributions, nonqualified distributions, and other circumstances have different rules.

IUL withdrawals, surrender, and loans can have tax implications depending on basis, MEC classification, and whether the policy remains in force. Loans can accrue interest and jeopardize coverage.

Access, expenses, and risk

A Roth IRA can fluctuate with its chosen investments and certain early earnings withdrawals may incur tax consequences. IUL policies may have sales and insurance charges, surrender charges, and restrictions on access to cash value.

A 0% floor on indexed credits does not eliminate the effect of ongoing policy charges. Compare net values and stressed outcomes, not just a favorable illustration.

When combining options may make sense

Someone with a real death-benefit need can compare term coverage and independent retirement saving with permanent policies and other arrangements. No strategy wins for every household.

Request an official insurance illustration and review current retirement account rules with qualified professionals before making a long-term commitment.

Questions for a licensed professional

  • Do I need permanent death protection or mainly retirement savings?
  • How do net values change with higher charges and lower growth?
  • Which withdrawal or loan could trigger tax consequences?

A balanced comparison exercise

A Roth IRA is an investment account for eligible contributors; IUL is a permanent life-insurance contract. For dependent protection, compare life insurance directly. For retirement accumulation, model contributions, expenses, access restrictions, and withdrawals in each option without inventing guaranteed investment returns.

Check surrender charges, later-life insurance costs, Roth contribution eligibility, and tax conditions for policy loans. Term coverage plus separate saving is also a legitimate comparison.
